Solar panels for terraced houses

Terraced houses are smaller than most homes, so the systems are smaller too. The roof is usually fine for solar, the things to check are which slope faces the sun, the state of the slate, and how the scaffolding reaches your roof when you share walls with the houses next door.

The quick version

For a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace:

  • Expect a 2 to 4 kW system, around 6 to 10 panels
  • The front and back slopes face opposite ways, so usually only one is worth using
  • Old or fragile slate may need repair before panels go on
  • Scaffolding can overhang a neighbour’s side, so access is worth sorting early

How much you can fit

A terraced roof is narrow and often steep, usually between 35 and 45 degrees, with separate front and back slopes. The usable area on one slope is roughly 10 to 20 square metres, which is room for about 6 to 12 panels.

That puts most terraces in the 2 to 4 kW range, around 6 to 10 panels. Chimneys, roof windows and rear extensions break up the space and often decide the real number. A small system is still worth fitting, so a broken-up roof usually just means fewer panels rather than no solar at all.

Which slope faces the sun

A terrace runs in a line, so the two main slopes face opposite directions. One might face roughly south and the other roughly north, or the pair might face east and west.

This matters a lot. A south, east or west slope is worth using. A north-facing main slope generates far less, often a third to a half below south, so it is rarely worth it on its own. On many terraces only the front or only the back is any good, which is normal and not a problem, it just sets where the panels go.

The state of the slate

Older terraces often have natural slate that has been up for a long time. Solar panels are built to last 25 years or more, so the roof under them needs years of life left first.

Fragile or slipping slate is worth fixing before the panels go on. Otherwise you risk paying to take the panels off and put them back later, which adds a lot to the real cost. An installer checks the covering as part of the survey and flags anything that needs doing.

Sharing walls with the neighbours

A terrace shares party walls, so the scaffolding needed to reach your roof can overhang the house next door, especially on an end gable or where access is only from the front. A quick word with your neighbour usually sorts it, and getting that agreed early stops it holding up the job.

Access from the rear can be tight too, through a narrow alley or a back garden. None of this stops a terrace getting solar, it just means the installer plans the access before booking the work in.
