Solar panels for semi-detached houses

Semi-detached houses are one of the best fits for solar in the UK. The roofs are a sensible size, the pitch is usually about right, and one slope often takes a full system on its own. The main things to weigh up are the roof shape and any shade from trees or the houses across the road.
The quick version
For a typical 1930s or later semi:

- A hipped roof has shorter slopes, which can limit the layout
- Shade from trees or the houses opposite can bite even on a south roof
How much you can fit
A semi usually has a tiled roof pitched at 30 to 40 degrees, which is close to ideal. The main slope is often 15 to 30 square metres, which is enough for a proper system.
That puts most semis at 3 to 5 kW, around 8 to 13 panels, with 4 kW the standard choice. One good slope often takes 10 to 12 panels on its own, so you frequently do not need to use both sides of the roof.
Hipped versus gabled roofs
A gabled roof has a flat triangular wall at each end and two large rectangular slopes, which is the easy case. A hipped roof slopes on all four sides, so the main slopes are shorter and more triangular.
A hip reduces the usable width and makes the layout trickier, so a hipped semi sometimes fits a few fewer panels than a gabled one of the same size. It is still well suited to solar, the hip just shapes where the panels sit. Dormers, bay windows and loft conversions break up the space in the same way.
Shade is the thing to watch
Shade does more damage than people expect, and it is the factor that catches semis out. A roadside tree or the house across the road can cast shade onto an otherwise good south-facing roof, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is strongest.
It is manageable. Power optimisers and microinverters, small bits of kit that let each panel work on its own, stop one shaded panel from dragging down the rest. A good installer measures the shade on your roof and builds it into the estimate rather than guessing.
The roof underneath
Solar panels last 25 years or more, so the roof needs years of life left first. On a semi from the 1930s the tiles themselves are often fine, but the fixings and the felt underneath can be aging, so they are worth a look.
If the roof is near the end of its life, sort it before the panels go on. The party wall you share with next door rarely needs anything beyond agreeing scaffolding access.
