Solar panels on flat vs pitched roofs

A flat roof works for solar just as well as a pitched one, it is just mounted differently. The panels go on tilted frames so they sit at a sensible angle instead of lying flat. That adds a little cost and weight, and there are mounting standards worth knowing about, but the output is much the same.

Why pitch matters

Most UK pitched roofs sit between 30 and 45 degrees, which is close to ideal. Anywhere from about 15 to 50 degrees still gives you the large majority of the possible output, so on a normal house the pitch is rarely a deal-breaker.

The angle matters because it sets how directly the sun hits the panels through the year. Too shallow and they catch less of the low winter sun. Too steep and they lose a little in summer. The 30 to 40 degree range is the sweet spot, which is why panels on a flat roof are tilted up rather than left lying down.

How flat roofs are done

A flat roof is anything under about 5 degrees. Panels are not left lying flat on it. Instead they sit on frames that tilt them up to a sensible angle, usually somewhere around 10 to 25 degrees, and aim them in a good direction.

Laid flat, panels generate roughly 10 to 20 percent less than they would tilted, so the frame is doing real work. Tilting recovers most of that. The trade-off is that tilted rows need spacing so they do not shade each other, which slightly reduces how many panels fit in a given area.

Weight and the roof underneath

Flat-roof frames are often held down with ballast, weights that stop them lifting in the wind, rather than being bolted through the roof. That keeps the roof watertight but adds load. A ballasted flat-roof system can weigh noticeably more than a standard pitched install.

Most roofs cope, but older flat roofs, garage roofs and lightweight extensions are the ones to check. The installer assesses whether the roof can carry the load and brings in a structural engineer if there is any doubt. As with any roof, the covering should have years of life left before panels go on top.

The mounting standard

There is a standard worth knowing about. Since 10 August 2025, MCS-certified flat-roof installs have to use an MCS 012-certified mounting system. MCS is the certification scheme behind export payments and most grants, so this matters if you want those.

In practice it means the framework holding your panels has to be a tested, approved product rather than an improvised fix. A certified installer handles this as a matter of course.
