Solar panel maintenance and lifespan

Solar is one of the lower-maintenance things you can put on a house. There is no routine servicing for most homes, and the panels themselves last decades. But it is not nothing. The inverter wears out before the panels do, and a little monitoring goes a long way. Here is what owning a system actually involves over its life.

Cleaning: rain does most of it

For most UK homes, the panels need no regular cleaning. Rain keeps them clean enough on a typical pitched roof, so there is no servicing cost to plan for. This is not the same as maintenance-free, but it is close on the cleaning front.

A few situations are different. Panels near busy roads, on farms, or under a lot of bird traffic can pick up enough grime to cost a few percent of output. The fix is to glance up from the ground a few times a year and only clean if they look visibly filmed or fouled. Over-cleaning has diminishing returns, and no one should be climbing on the roof for it. Safe access matters more than a spotless panel.

The inverter: the one part you replace

The inverter is the box that turns the panels DC power into the AC your home uses. It is the part that does not last the full life of the system. Most inverters run for around 10 to 15 years and are then replaced once, typically for roughly £1,000 to £2,000 including fitting for a standard string inverter.

This is worth building into your expectations from the start. The panels can outlast the inverter by more than a decade, so one mid-life inverter swap is a normal cost of ownership rather than a fault. Hybrid inverters that also run a battery cost more, and systems built on micro-inverters are replaced unit by unit, which changes the labour.

How long the panels last

Crystalline panels commonly last 25 to 30 years or more. They do not stop working at 25 years. The output just tapers gently. The rate of that taper is the degradation rate, and it sits at around half a percent a year after a small first-year drop. Premium panels degrade a little slower, around a third of a percent.

In practice that means a system still produces around 88 percent of its original output after 25 years at half a percent a year, and roughly 95 percent after 10 years. Good panels, well installed, track close to that curve for their whole life.

Warranties and what to read

Panels come with two warranties, and it pays to know the difference. The product warranty covers materials and workmanship, usually 15 to 25 years. The performance warranty guarantees a minimum output, often at least 80 to 85 percent, at year 25. The performance one tells you what the manufacturer expects of the panels over their life. Both usually cover the panels only, not the inverter or the mounts, and both have exclusions, so read the documents.

A battery, if you have one, comes with its own warranty, typically about 10 years and often tied to a number of charge cycles. By the end of that term a battery commonly holds around 60 to 80 percent of its original usable capacity. The inverter has its own shorter warranty, usually 5 to 10 years, which is one reason it is the part most likely to be replaced during the system life.

Monitoring and what can go wrong

The most useful habit is light monitoring. Check the generation through the inverter or its app every month or so on a clear day, and compare it to what you would expect for the season. Summer figures will dwarf winter ones, which is normal. A sustained drop of 20 to 30 percent against previous years is the kind of thing worth looking into.

Faults are not rare. A peer-reviewed study of 3.3 million UK modules found that 36.5 percent showed thermal defects such as hotspots or inactive areas. Many of these are minor, but the serious ones tend to trace back to poor panels or a poor install, which is another reason the installer matters. The work is carried out by MCS-certified installers, the standard required for export payments and most grants. Micro-cracks and hotspots are not visible from the ground, so monitoring plus an occasional inspection is how they get caught. Birds nesting under panels are a separate issue in urban areas, blocking airflow and cutting output, and mesh bird-proofing is an extra cost if your roof is affected.
